“Girls and boys can’t sit next to each other Ma’am”

“Girls and boys can’t sit next to each other Ma’am”
“Hmm.. tell me why?”
“People in the village will mistake us- they will judge us…”
“I am sure we can explain this to them”
“No, Ma’am ! No way we can have them talk to each other”
“Okay… So we all have big dreams for our children – that they study well, go to work in an airconditioned office or serve as doctors and IAS officers. As an adult, can they say I can’t talk to someone from the opposite gender”
Some giggles… some thinking faces… “Ma’am they will figure it out! But….”
Conversations continue.. and we start to see some of these things in classrooms – girls and boys sitting together, working on projects together and acing tests together. Here’s our story of #change and welcoming an equitable world
